Gingerbread house dimensions

Piece sizes for six common gingerbread houses, worked out from the footprint, wall height and roof pitch. All of them assume dough rolled to 1/4 in, a 1/2 in roof overhang and side walls that sit between the front and back walls. Each one links to a printable template at actual size.

Dough includes 25% for trimmings, at an estimated 1.2 g per cm³. Half sheets are 18 × 13 in pans, with the pieces about 3/4 in apart and from the rim.

Picking a size

The 6 × 8 in classic is a good first house. It takes about 1.3 kg of dough, which is one or two batches of most recipes, and bakes on 2 half sheets.

Dough use grows fast with size. The 8 × 10 in large house is a third wider than the classic and needs 1.8 times the dough. Bigger walls also need thicker dough to stand straight, so for anything above 8 in wide it helps to roll a little thicker and use the generator with that thickness.

A steeper roof makes the gable walls taller and the roof panels longer. On the 6 × 8 in house, going from 45° to 60° raises the peak from 7 to 9.2 in. Steep roofs look like alpine cottages, and candy slides off them more easily.

Other sizes

For any other size, type it into the template generator. If you only have one baking sheet, the one-sheet guide lists houses that fit. When the pieces are baked, the assembly guide covers putting them together, and the icing guide works out how much royal icing each size needs.
